Everyone enjoys having a small pond in the back yard, and they build their patio around the pond. Many people wonder just what type of fish would be the best to put in the pond. You want fish that can with stand cool temperatures and the hot summer sun. Although the Koi are considered an exotic fish, they came from the rivers of China and other South East Asian countries, so they can deal with the cold and hot temperatures that we may expect. The best choice would be the incredible Koi fish from Japan. This article will explain How to Build a Koi Pond the easiest and most inexpensive way there is.
To build the Koi pond you will want to choose a spot either in the front or the back yard. Then you will need to level the area where the water will be, so the area will not have to be as deep as a regular swimming pool. Koi get to be quite large fish so you will want to have plenty of water for them to live in, approximately 1000 gallons of water or better. The pond will need to be at least 3 feet deep, but to keep wild birds from catching the fish for their dinner it is recommended to be deeper, around five feet. In some of the southern states, there are cranes and other water foul that love a fish dinner, so you may need to consider some type of covering over the pond such as a canopy that could keep the birds out of the water.
You should draw a sketch to serve as a blueprint of the way you would like the Koi pond to look and stay as close to the dimensions as you can. Since many yards have lots of tree roots underneath the top soil a raised pond may be a better choice of ponds to build. You will then need to purchase enough 4 x 4 x 12 or 16 posts from the home improvement store. You will also want to purchase a pre-fabricated fiberglass swimming pool such as a wading pool that you can order from a pool store.
Once you get everything that you need and the area has been cleaned and leveled off, you should take a few of the posts and place them under the edges of the fiberglass pool. Take a level on the last post and check to make sure that the sides will be the same height once it is filled with water, you may have to use shims to get the edges just right.
Next fill your pool half way with water and put some large stones on the bottom and around the sides. It may be necessary to take out some of the water that you just put inside the pond.
Next you will want to lay the electrical plumbing for the pump and the lights that you intend to use. Measure the distance from the pond to the electrical box. Using 2 inch pipe you can run the electrical chord through this and bury in under the ground.
Cover all around you Koi pond with dirt and add any types of plants that you desire. Once the pond is finished you will have a very beautiful yard display that you can be proud of
