One of the most delightful and awe-inspiring things in life is having your own Koi garden. However, there are many aspects of a Koi pond garden to consider before you rush out and buy your favorite Koi fish species. Whether you have an existing outdoor pond garden that you enjoy or you are preparing to build your own pond garden especially for Koi so you can enjoy them for many years.

Plant life is naturally the first garden type that most people think of first. They may consider flower gardens or vegetable gardens. Yet there are more, other types of interesting and beautiful gardens. All have their very own special rewards. Koi fish add lively colorful beauty and companionship to just about any type of garden, providing it is safe for the fish to inhabit. A Koi garden combines three essential aspects. They are the pond and plant life as well as you Koi fish.

Size and depth are essential in the pond. It should have at least four feet in depth. This allows room for the Koi to flourish. These depths provide protection to the Koi to escape raccoons and cats. These fish require space for growing, since they can reach large lengths. When you feel comfortable with a larger pond, you can always add more Koi fish. After considering how large your pond will be, consider the placement of your Koi garden. Remember, direct sunlight is not recommendable for the protection of your fish from flying predators. Shade trees are good for this; however, trees do drop their own debris of twigs, branches and leaves into the water. Remember not to place your Koi pond in any area where you will spray any harmful chemicals such as pesticides. Even small amounts of lawn chemicals will kill your fish.

Koi fish love to nibble and eat, they do enjoy snacking on plants. Therefore, you will need the right kind of plants for your pond area. Koi fish enjoy digging into the dirt of potted plants or they may even knock them over. Some pond owners find this frustrating, since it will cloud the pond with mud. You can solve this dilemma by wrapping the pot top with netting to keep the fish from digging into them. On the other hand, you may wish to place some pea gravel and then river stones on top of the dirt. This will sustain the pots from any rigors of the Koi. Any plant foliage on the bottom of the pond is Koi fodder. These fish do enjoy eating and nibbling! The best plant choice for your Koi garden is lilies. You can choose for various varieties. Some lilies flourish in deeper ponds and some prefer shallower ponds. Lilies provide excellent shade and shelter for Koi, although, they are not great oxygenating plants.

Your Koi garden will thrive in beauty for many years, when you consider your Koi garden as a whole ecosystem rather than merely Koi fish or plant life. Just imagine sitting outside enjoying the rich pleasures of these wonderful fish.
